Knaresborough Town’s Emirates FA Cup adventure came to an end with a 4-1 defeat at home to Workington from the Evo-Stik Premier Division on Saturday.
Nerves were evident early on, though Brad Walker
ran on to Rob Worrall
’s pass to force a save from Aaran Taylor in the first meaningful attack.
Workington began to show their superiority, though in short bursts, but were thankful for a fortunate rebound which fell conveniently to Conor Tinnion who fired home the opener in the 16th minute.Jack Rushworth
made a good save to deny Jordan Holt and then tipped over from Daniel Wordsworth as Workington threatened to add to their advantage.
Bradley Hubbold was narrowly wide and a further low shot was caught by Rushworth before a long period in which Knaresborough settled and matched their opponents in many areas.
Goals were not forthcoming, though Rob Worrall
’s free kick just before half time flew over the bar.
The early stages of the second half were also closely fought with Ben Cohen
entering the stage and giving his marker trouble down the left with strong runs. His centre just before the hour mark brought a fine stop from Taylor, but it was the visitors who scored their vital second goal in the 67th minute.
Tinnion cut in from the left and drove in a low cross which took a slight deflection from Scott Allison to move the ball past Rushworth.
Tinnion shot wide but the third goal arrived in the 77th minute when Jason Taylor headed home from a free kick to seal the victory.
Cohen’s effort was saved and Rushworth tipped over from Jamie Mellen before substitute, Sam Joel, headed in a Niall Cowperthwaite free kick to make the score 4-0 in the 85th minute.
A consolation arrived for Knaresborough two minutes later when Cohen’s free kick took a deflection to give Taylor no chance, but Workington ran out worthy winners proving the difference in class between the sides.
