Knaresborough Town won their opening home league game of the season in a closely-contested game with Goole at Manse Lane on Tuesday evening.
Goole, who were relegated from the Evo-Stik League after last season, started brightly and Derry Robson broke free of the defence only to be thwarted by Liam Corbett’s diving save. Alex Varley then shot into the side net as the visitors looks to put their disappointing opening to the season behind them.
As Knaresborough began to settle, Will Lenehan headed wide from a Dan Thirkell free kick and Colin Heath shot over following a promising Ben Cohen run and pass.
Cohen then had a shot saved by Daniel Montgomery before Laurence Hunter fired a long-range effort against the post.
Thirkell’s shot was cleared from the line and Rob Youhill was narrowly wide as the home side looked to press their advantage before the break, but the game remained goalless until the 64th minute when Brad Walker beat two men on the right side of the penalty area before crossing for Heath to side-foot home the opener.
Goole pressed and Knaresborough were unable to regain their poise on the ball and, after Josh Eastwood had a shot over the bar, a move down the right lead to the equaliser. Corbett saved well from one shot, but was powerless to stop substitute, Max Tweddle, from converting at the back post in the 84th minute.
Knaresborough, and their support, were shaken by the goal and immediately broke towards the Goole goal. Steve Bromley was held up, but the ball broke free to Cohen who beat his man and cut inside before unleashing a curling shot high into the net for a deserved winner in the 86th minute.
