Knaresborough Town were beaten 3-2 at home by Liversedge on Saturday to end a successful start to the season, but there were many positive sides to the defeat which came as a result of a late penalty kick.
Knaresborough battered their opponents in the opening half and would later rue many missed chances as they should have turned ends with far more than their single goal lead.
Steve Bromley’s early overhead kick was saved by Harrison Davison-Hall and then Brad Walker’s shot was deflected wide.
Bromley has further effort saved as was Loz Hunter’s free kick before both Luke Stewart and Bradley volleyed over and another free kick from Hunter was denied.
The deserved goal arrived in the 35th minute when Rob Worrall’s shot from the edge of the area took a deflection to wrong-foot Davison-Hall.
Dan Thirkell then deflected a cross from the left into his own side-netting in Liversedge’s first meaningful attack, but the Sam Cook headed over as Knaresborough ended the half on top.
The visitors came out with a far more positive attitude after the break and Liam Corbett had to save from Mitch Hamilton before Bromley had a shot saved following a free kick.
Liversedge continued their press and a Crossfield move was not fully cleared and a right wing centre found its way across to Red Bates who slammed home at the far post to level in the 62nd minute.
Corbett saved from Joe Walton as Liversedge looked to press home their new-won advantage and it was striker, Walton who shot home their second in the 69th minute after he was allowed time in the penalty area.
Knaresborough attacks were rare at this stage, but the Liversedge defence conceded a corner in beating away one of those forays, and the resulting kick was headed high into the net by Thirkell at the back post to make it 2-2 in the 84th minute.
A scramble nearly led to a third for Knaresborough as Bromley and Stewart both went close, but the points all went back to Liversedge when a penalty was conceded following a push at a free kick and Samuel Ackroyd shot home to rob Knaresborough of the point which their first half performance certainly warranted.
