Knaresborough Town won a tight game against Hemsworth Miners’ Welfare at Manse Lane on Saturday in a match which ebbed and flowed from one side to the other and remained tight until the final whistle.
The visitors began the brighter and Nash Connolly broke free of the defence only to shoot wide early on.
Brad Walker hit wide for Knaresborough from distance and Conor Donoghue had a rare effort just wide, but Hemsworth came close to opening the scoring when Harry Viggars headed wide from a free kick wide on the right wing.
Walker then fed a pass through for Luke Stewart to sprint clear of the back line and fire low under the advancing Jordan Greaves in the Hemsworth goal in the 37th minute.
On the 45th minute, Knaresborough won a corner on the left wing and Will Lenehan was left unmarked as he rose to head home Rob Worrall’s kick to make it 2-0 at the break.
Connolly gave Hemsworth reward for their endeavours when he drove home at the near post when given too much room on the right of the penalty area in the 54th minute.
Walker was wide soon afterwards as Knaresborough overcame the pressure briefly and it was from a quick break along the left that the decisive third goal arrived. Walker broke free and selflessly squared inside to the unmarked Baker who slammed home in the 66th minute.
Stephen Wakefield headed over for the visitors and then Baker had a shot saved by Greaves before volleying wide from a Gregg Anderson header.
In the 79th minute, substitute, Adam Knight, crossed from the right only to see the effort evade Sam Lee and end up in the far side of the net to make the later part of the game a nervous one for the home following.
Lee had two low saves to make to deny an equaliser to both Sidney Santos and Sean Ripley and watched another Knight shot fly over the top as Knaresborough held out for the spoils.
